Abstract: | Theimmunesystemiscomplexandpervasiveasitfunctionstopreventorlimitinfectionsinthehumanbody.Inahealthyorganism,theimmunesystemandtheredoxbalanceofimmunecellsmaintainhomeostasiswithinthebody.Thefailuretomaintainthebalancemayleadtoimpairedimmuneresponseandeitheroveractivityorabnormallylowactivityoftheimmunecellsresultinginautoimmuneorimmunedeficiencydiseases.Compoundscontaininga,b-unsaturatedcarbonyl-basedmoietiesareoftenreactive.Thereactivityofthesegroupsisresponsiblefortheirdiversepharmacologicalactivities,andthemostimportantandwidelystudiedincludethenaturalcompoundscurcumin,chalcone,andzerumbone.Numerousstudieshaverevealedthemainlyimmunosuppressiveandanti-inflammatoryactivitiesoftheaforesaidcompounds.Thisreviewhighlightsthespecificimmunosuppressiveeffectsofthesenaturala,b-unsaturatedcarbonyl-basedcompounds,andtheiranalogsandderivativesondifferenttypesofimmunecellsoftheinnate(granulocytes,monocytes,macrophages,anddendriticcells)andadaptive(Tcells,Bcells,andnaturalkillercells)immunesystems.Theinhibitoryeffectsofthesecompoundshavebeencomprehensivelystudiedonneutrophils,monocytesandmacrophagesbuttheireffectsonTcells,Bcells,naturalkillercells,anddendriticcellshavenotbeenwellinvestigated.Itisofparamountimportancetocontinuegeneratingexperimentaldataonthemechanismsofactionofa,b-unsaturatedcarbonyl-basedcompoundsonimmunecellstoprovideusefulinformationforensuingresearchtodiscovernewimmunomodulatingagents. |
